If you’re like me, sometimes you find yourself getting frustrated because it feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day. I get up, do my prayers, get the kids ready for the day, go to work, come home, help with supper, clean up supper, spend a little time with the kids, get the kids to bed, and then I finally get some time to sit down with my wife and talk with her about our day. I feel for many high school students because they are even busier than I am. If this is even close to your average day, how are we to find the time to “live out our faith” daily?
I’d love to be able to share my faith with others and “evangelize” the world, but I don’t have the time. I’d love to spend time each day diving into scripture, praying the rosary, getting to daily Mass, etc., but God would have to add a couple more hours to the day.
While we all have to prioritize and choose to do good things yet avoid being too busy or attached to certain things, I spent a couple of years really struggling with this. I believed that God had truly called me into this crazy busy life I was living. Everything I was doing was good and I believed God had given it all to me as a gift. But why then was I struggling? To be honest, my life also felt monotonous at times and I found myself wondering “what more is out there?” What’s weird is if it you would’ve asked me five years prior what I wanted in life, I would’ve told you “a wife, kids, a job that I love, etc.” I had and was doing all of those things! So what was I missing? What does “living your faith daily” look like when things seem monotonous or that you’ve “settled” in some way?
Here are some tips for striving to live out your faith and ensure you are striving for holiness each and every day.
Make Time for Prayer
Find time each day to just be with God. Don’t judge your “holiness” based on how much time you’re able to give compared to others. Commit to what makes sense, follow through on your commitment, and give God a chance each day to really speak to your heart. Responding to God through prayer is an act of faith!
Love Those Around You
We can all work on being more patient and understanding, especially with those closest to us. Commit each day to living your life selflessly for others. Each day, wake up and recommit to loving as Jesus loves. Focus especially on small ways that may not necessarily be recognized or acknowledged by others.
Be Responsive More Than Reactive
God has given you this life and the many blessings and challenges that come with it. Learn to be a follower and receive what God is giving you, rather than trying to get ahead of Jesus or getting anxious about the things that are not getting done. Don’t run from difficult situations but embrace them and love them like Jesus did when He carried the cross. Throughout your day, ask yourself how you can love better in the situations that just happened and ask God for the grace to respond well and love in the things yet to come that day.
These are just a few things that I have found incredibly helpful as I strive to grow in my faith each day. While most days look the same, I find great joy in knowing that I’m living the life that God has given me and I am doing my best to respond and return that life to Him.
